General Information
Personal injury can result from contact with refrigerant. Contact with refrigerant can cause frost bite. Keep face and hands away to help prevent injury. Protective goggles must always be worn when refrigerant lines are opened, even if the gauges indicate the system is empty of refrigerant. Always use precaution when a fitting is removed. Slowly loosen the fitting. If the system is still under pressure, release it slowly in a well ventilated area. Personal injury or death can result from inhaling refrigerant through a lit cigarette. Inhaling air conditioner refrigerant gas through a lit cigarette or other smoking method or inhaling fumes released from a flame contacting air conditioner refrigerant gas, can cause bodily harm or death. Do not smoke when servicing air conditioners or wherever refrigerant gas may be present. Use a certified recovery and recycling cart to properly remove the refrigerant from the air conditioning system. |
All refrigerant lines that are metal or flexible hose must be free of sharp bends. Also, do not use a refrigerant line that is kinked. Sharp bends will cause a restriction in the refrigerant flow. Restrictions in the refrigerant lines are identified by cold spots or frost on the line at the restriction. Restriction in the lines will reduce the performance and the efficiency of the system.
The radius of bends in the flexible hose must never be less than 10 times the outside diameter of the hose.
Do not allow the flexible hoses to come within 63.5 mm (2.5 inch) of the exhaust manifold.
The hoses need to be inspected yearly for leaks and hardness. Do a leak test on all the hoses and lines. Refer to the Service Manual, SENR5664, 'Refrigerant Leakage-Test' section in Testing and Adjusting. Replace hoses if leaks or hardness are in the hoses. Replace hoses with a new hose that is sealed and free of contaminants.
The correct use of wrenches is very important when connections are made. The type of wrench is also important. Use only wrenches that are made for use with tube type fittings. When a hose or a metal line is connected or disconnected, use a wrench on the fitting, and on the nut. Also use a wrench on the hose connection.
When components and refrigerant lines are disconnected or removed refer to the Service Manual, SENR5664, 'Refrigerant Recovery' section.
Install protective plugs or caps on all components and on all hoses that are disconnected or removed.
O-ring seals and seats must be in good condition. Small cuts, scratches or particles of dirt will cause a leak in the system. Put new refrigerant oil on all new O-ring seals at time of installation. Do not use any kind of sealant on any air conditioner hose connection.
Installation of 2Q-7658 Air Conditioner Kit
The following instructions are for 938F, IT38F, 950F Series II, 960F, 966F Series II and 970F.
For specific part numbers and specific illustrations, refer to the Custom Parts Manual, SEBC1243. Refer to 'Installation of Air Conditioner Lines and Components' which is included in this publication.
Note: Put identification marks on all lines, on all hoses, on all wires, and on all tubes. This will help to prevent fluid loss and this will help to keep contaminants from entering the system.

Unexpected machine movement can cause injury or death. To avoid possible machine movement, place the hydraulic activation control lever to the locked position and attach a Special Instruction, SEHS7332, 'Do Not Operate' or similar warning tag to the control lever. |
- Access is required on the right side of the machine near the articulation joint. The machine must be turned to the extreme left.
- Drain the coolant from the radiator into a suitable container for storage or for disposal.
- Open the right front side panel (3) and remove the two screws from the hinge.

- Remove the panel (3) from the cab.
Cat 950f Parts
- Remove the four bolts (4) on the front panel (5) .
- Remove the front panel (5) .
- Disconnect all connections between the heater and the cab.
- Remove the eight bolts (8) in order to remove the duct assembly (6) from the heater (7) .

- Remove the heater from the opening in the cab.
Note: Carefully remove the heater from the cab so the heater coil does not become damaged. Damaged coils will cause leakage.

- Remove the plate (9) from the heater (7) .

- Install the evaporator coil (10) below the heater coil (11) .

- Install the insulation in order to replace the plate (9) that was removed.
- Install the heater/air conditioner unit in the cab.
- Route the wiring harness through the back of the blower assembly.
Note: The wiring harness may be hidden within the blower assembly.

- Replace the blower assembly onto the support assembly. Attach the wires to the switch assembly.
- Connect all hoses and tubes for the heater/air conditioner unit in the cab.
Installation of the Condenser Cores for the 938F and IT38F
The following instructions are for the 938F and IT38F. Continue installation with the section 'Installation of Air Conditioning Lines and Components'.
- Drain the coolant from the radiator into a suitable container for storage or for disposal.
- Remove the lock pins (12) .

- Remove the radiator access door (13) .
- Remove the radiator top (14) .

- Remove the baffle (15), four bolts and four washers (16) .
- Insert two condenser core assemblies (17). Secure the core assemblies with the appropriate hardware.

- Replace the six end tank seals (18) .
- Install the eight mounts (19) in the top holes of the radiator core.
- Replace the radiator top (14) .
Installation of Air Conditioning Lines and Components
For specific information for the routing of the lines and component location and part numbers, refer to the Custom Parts Manual, SEBC1243. The following instructions are for all models which are included in this Special Instruction.
- Install the refrigerant compressor (20). Orient the compressor so the nameplate is visible from the right side of the machine. Do not tighten the bolts until the compressor drive belt is installed and adjusted.
Note: Tighten the belt to a tension of 535 ± 22 N (120 ± 5 lb). Use a Caterpillar 144-0235 Belt Tension Gauge . Operate the air conditioner for approximately 30 minutes. Then adjust the tension of the compressor drive belt to 400 ± 44 N (90 ± 10 lb).

- Connect the discharge and the suction hoses to the discharge and suction ports on the compressor.
- Connect the electrical wires to the magnetic clutch.
- Install the air conditioner condenser in front of the radiator.

- Monitor the direction of flow at all times, when the lines are being connected to the components.
- Refill radiator coolant.
- Charge the system. Refer to Service Manual, SENR5664, 'Refrigerant System-Charge'.
- Reinstall the radiator access door and lock pins.
- Reinstall the cab panels and hardware.
- Once the installation is complete, the air conditioner will automatically activate when the fan is turned on.
